Abstract
This thesis addresses the founding and early history of the literary journal boundary 2. In 1972, Canadian poet and novelist Robert Kroetsch launched the journal with the American critic and philosopher William V. Spanos while both worked as professors of English at Binghamton University (in New York State). “A Loving Strife” investigates the professional and personal relationship between the founding editors of boundary 2 and finds that points of sympathy and points of difference between these men created a productive tension (an Auseinandersetzung) that informs the dynamism and strength of this enduring publication. Sources include the published works of both Kroetsch and Spanos, the early volumes of the journal (1972 – 1978), the work of other commentators, personal interviews that I conducted in Binghamton and the journal’s early editorial correspondence, now held in Special Collections at the University of Calgary, as part of the Robert Kroetsch fonds.
