Abstract
This study assesses the potential arbitrage opportunities of a transmission connected Energy Storage System (ESS) in a liberalized electricity market. In assessing these opportunities, technical constraints, uniqueness of market operation characteristics and regulatory policies are all considered. The system under consideration has a power rating that is large enough that the impacts of its operation on the pool price in the Alberta electricity market should be considered. Also explored in this study is the investigation of the impact of transmission tariffs on arbitrage operations of ESS. As the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is currently reviewing transmission tariff policy, this work investigates the application of existing tariff structures to understand how they impact the economic operation of ESS. The scope of this study considers impacts of tariff on profitability, operation cost, energy traded volume, price volatility and cost of energy to consumers.
