Abstract
Despite having a geothermal resource base, with significant technical potential, the province of Alberta lacks basic legislation allowing developers to obtain the leases and permits that would provide them the opportunity to tap into this resource. With the development and eventual implementation of the “Alternative and Renewable Energy Policy Framework”, the province has the opportunity to fill this legislative gap. The changes required are not daunting and if made they have the potential to help the province meet its GHG reduction targets, while simultaneously diversifying the grid, improving the environment and providing opportunities for First Nations communities.
