This research thesis aims to develop multi-band/multi-standard, reconfigurable transmitter architecture capable of operating on number of different wireless standards at different carriers. Such transmitter is intended to be used in software defined radio terminals, which are most suitable for upcoming wireless network applications. With the increase in multi-media applications and multi-functionality, the efforts are to obtain high data rate and highly spectrum efficient communication schemes with satisfactory quality of service to the subscribers. Moreover, the upcoming standards should have backward compatibility with existing network standards in order to provide smooth network migration. Therefore, reconfigurable multi-band/multi-standard software defined radio systems must be adopted. In addition, the high efficiency linear region of these transmitter systems should also be increased in order to efficiently handle advanced modulation schemes with high peak to average power ratios while maintaining the high linearity requirements. For the proof of concept, this research is focused on the development of dual-band/dualĀstandard reconfigurable transmitter architecture that utilizes dual-band Doherty power amplifier for high efficiency operation in the back-off region with Hybrid-RF-digital predistortion based linearization scheme implemented on a reconfigurable Field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. Since, the linearization scheme is implemented in FPGA, it gives multi-standard capability, whereas dual-band Doherty provides the dual-band capability to RF front-end of the transmitter.
