The idea birthed was the right of each individual to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and was documented as the Declaration of Independence. Today's tyrannies are not single sourced but are challenging the experience of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. My search for solutions to the tyrannies in todays architectural practices led me to look for solutions through the same foundational principles Jefferson used when he wrote the Declaration of Independence and created Monticello. The idea of life and liberty in contemporary times is expanded to include all life forms and that that which sustains life. Declarations of Interdependence and a Bill of Responsibility are proposed based on the study of Jefferson's democratic and architectural activities. It could be that fully functioning democracy would render the concept of sustainability redundant.en
