In this thesis I will investigate the early modem novel Don Quixote, written by Miguel de Cervantes, as a metafictional novel that focuses on the process of its own reading. According to my hypothesis the author of this novel invites the reader to experience the process of reading the novel as the interplay of three forces, the known, the unknown and the unknowable. The known is the literal interpretation of the novel, as the adventures of a knight errant and his squire. The unla10wn is the potential meaning of the novel, through the evolving reading consciousness of the reader. This potential can be conceptualized as the creative force, and it is symbolized in Don Quixote by the character Dulcinea. The unknowable is the abstract force of infinity, a force allowing the expansion of perception in an unlimited way. Infinity is represented in Don Quixote by a game of paradoxes and synchronicities, one of them being the metaliterary play expressed in the form of mise-en-abyme. The manifestation of infinity in this novel intends to have an effect in the reader and to produce a change in his perception of the novel and reality. This transformation is a process that responds to a desire for inner freedom.
