dc.description.abstract | This thesis is an anthropological study of ideology and social change within a Philippine context. The concepts of ideology and hegemony are used to explore how religion, as a form of ideology, is related to changes in the broader society. The thesis consists of an historical and an ethnographic component. The historical component explores the close relationship between Christianity, in particular Roman Catholicism, and colonial rule. The ethnographic component compares Catholicism and Fundamentalism, as differing forms of Christianity, in operation within a similar social milieu. The beliefs, scale and organizational structures of the Roman Catholic and Fundamentalist Baptist Churches in Kabankalan produce different ideological responses to social change. The ideological perspectives of the two religious groups are reflected in their educational and rural development programs. The Catholics advocate structural changes to society, while the Fundamentalists focus on transformation of the individual, and encourage conformity to the existing system. | |
