As a result, they operate in an environment where information is often under the control of corporate interests and other nations. For instance, Canadian scholarly communication is affected by American legislation (e.g. The USA PATRTIOT Act) and governmental rulings (e.g. rulings of the Office of Foreign Asset Controls). While some discussion has taken place, there is an overall lack of a national dialogue on how to ameliorate this situation. There is also evidence that access to Canadian digital content within Canada is selective.Item Open Access The library research process: theory and reality(University of Calgary, 1996-11) Hunter, Maureen; Clarke, Helen; Lipton, Saundra; Library; Libraries & Cultural Resources; University of CalgaryItem Open Access Making measurement of use(2007-01-26) Clarke, HelenItem Open Access Making Measurement of Use(2010-07-09T17:40:58Z) Clarke, HelenItem Open Access Neo-reference, getting ready for real change(2009-10-23T22:36:10Z) Beatty, Susan; Clarke, HelenWhat is the future of reference? This presentation will contemplate a future where a new reference service must emerge. We have two choices. We can be traditionalists. We can maintain our roles with ever diminishing numbers and seek out that vanishing species of users who still need “help” with simple tasks. Or we can expand into new territory, mastering a higher level of skill and far more complex tools. Using the compelling vision of the Taylor Family Digital Library at the University of Calgary we reflect on the impact such a change will have on traditional structures, staffing, and collection development. What are the possibilities related to rebuilding and reconstructing information for reference purposes? The purpose of our session is not to define one model of neo-reference but rather to offer up some thought provoking ideas to get people thinking about our future.Item Open Access Scholarly electronic publishing in the humanities and social sciences in Canada : a study of the transformation of knowledge communication(The Humanities and Social Sciences Federation of Canada, 1999) Au Yeung, Tim; Archer, Keith; Huebert, Rob; McGillivray, Murray; Clarke, Helen; Girouard, Jacqueline; Beaudoin, Martin; Onn, Shirley; Bell, Jackie; Kerr, JamesItem Open Access Shopping in the ERMS Aisle: Reviewing Vendor and Open Source Offerings and Hints for the Busy Shopper(2008-04-10T00:26:36Z) Waller, Andrew; Clarke, HelenThis book chapter provides a summary of available electronic resource management systems (ERMS) as of Fall 2006. They have progressed to the point where Verde is now an integral part of the collections and acquisitions processes. This presentation reflects on how the ERMS served as a marker for internal changed as the University of Calgary moved to a digital-preferred collection, including the creation of new positions, new roles, and new workflows.
