Abstract
What is the future of reference? This presentation will contemplate a future where a new reference service must emerge. We have two choices. We can be traditionalists. We can maintain our roles with ever diminishing numbers and seek out that vanishing species of users who still need “help” with simple tasks. Or we can expand into new territory,
mastering a higher level of skill and far more complex tools. Using the compelling vision of the Taylor Family Digital Library at the University of Calgary we reflect on the impact such a change will have
on traditional structures, staffing, and collection development. What are the possibilities related to rebuilding and reconstructing information for reference purposes? The purpose of our session is not to define one model of neo-reference but rather to offer up some thought provoking
ideas to get people thinking about our future.
