Item Open Access Comfort, conversation and community: The role of the museum in art education(2000) Eiserman, Jennifer Roma Flint; Calvert, AnnItem Open Access Echoes of Sorrow: A Narrative Journey Through the Rollercoaster of Loss(2024-09-09) Nemati, Behnaz; Eiserman, Jennifer Roma Flint; Leblanc, Jean-Rene; Gadbois, DenisThis thesis explores the intricate and complex aspects of human experience, focusing on the interplay between artistic expression and the process of grappling with loss. It examines how art can serve as a transformative and therapeutic tool for individuals collectively experiencing grief. Central to this exploration is an installation designed as a dining room, where the audience, like guests, can sit at the table, flip through drawings, and engage in shared experiences of loss. This interactive setup, termed "sitting," invites guests to contribute their own stories of grief in a memory book, fostering a shared space of empathy and connection. Strict ethical standards are upheld by asking contributors to remain anonymous, not sharing personal details that might identify them, and destroying the memory book when the MFA exhibition ends. Each drawing in this collection acts as a personal diary, capturing emotions and experiences, and creating a collective narrative. The research methods employed are qualitative and introspective, focusing on personal experiences as the primary source of knowledge. This thesis examines the personal therapeutic process through art and contributes to a broader cultural dialogue about resilience, vulnerability, and the human condition. By breaking the silence surrounding grief, this project transforms private suffering into a public declaration of resilience and hope.Item Open Access False Colouring(2016) Procter, Anne; Huot, Claire; Eiserman, Jennifer Roma Flint; Finn, Patrick James; Boutin, Marc JosephFalse Colouring is an exhibition that consists of three looping video installations, and over a thousand hand-sized, hand-printed paper dresses that were hung with clothespins to a labyrinthine configuration of white string. This installation was created as a means to externalize, reveal, and release personal narratives, as well as the physical relics – or souvenirs – that they were tied to. Through this exhibition I have given new life to the ephemeral memories of my past, and I have been given an opportunity to live more presently in my own life. The present paper was written as an accompaniment to the False Colouring exhibition, an explanation for all the choices that I have made, and the inspiration that I have felt. I have studied the life and works of Matisse, and I have read many books, including The Comfort of Things and Stuff by Daniel Miller and On Longing by Susan Stewart. Keywords: Souvenir, Materiality, Story, Memory, Precious, Paper, and Catharsis.Item Open Access Incorporating Ability and Disability into Curriculum and Community(2017-05) Eiserman, Jennifer Roma Flint; Averns, DickAn initial case study describes how three different U of C classes addressed ability and disability through curricular collaboration with the Calgary based SPARK Disability Arts Festival. This conference workshop will then present strategies for participants to modify their own curricula: enhancing diversity by connecting ability with disability.
