Item Open Access First nations gambling policy in Canada(Canada West Foundation, 2001-06) Kelley, RobinIn recent years, some First Nations across Canada have pursued increased gambling opportunities within their communities. The introduction of on-reserve gambling is seen as an important opportunity to help stimulate economic development, create jobs, and provide revenues to develop much needed infrastructure and social programs. In the long run, some argue that on-reserve gambling would allow First Nations communities to become less dependent on funding from the federal and provincial governments and, in so doing, increase their political and economic sovereignty. However, gambling is not always a economic panacea; the size and scope of the benefits are dependent on a number of factors including the level of market saturation, problem gambling impacts, and the ability to draw gamblers to reserves.Item Open Access Gambling@home : internet gambling in Canada(Canada West Foundation, 2001-10) Kelley, Robin; Todosichuk, Peter; Azmier, Jason J.Item Open Access Triumph, tragedy or trade-off? : considering the impact of gambling(Canada West Foundation, 2001-08) Azmier, Jason J.; Kelley, Robin; Todosichuk, PeterTo address a knowledge gap, the Canada West Foundation launched a three-year study in September 1998. This project was designed to provide a much-needed comprehensive picture of many of the public policy issues surrounding gambling in Canada. Four overarching research areas were explored: (1) the impact of gambling on the non-profit sector; (2) opinions, attitudes and public policy implications of gambling; (3) the history and scope of gambling in Canada; and (4) the socio-economic impact of gambling on communities. This paper addresses the final component—the impact of gambling.
