Chacmool conferences have pushed the boundaries of archaeological method and theory, bringing together renowned international experts in an intimate conference setting with students and emerging scholars. The progressive themes of the conference have helped define the directions taken by the discipline as a whole, while the opportunities to present in an informal gathering has contributed to the launch of innumerable professional careers. Chacmool conferences are unique for the prominent role of both undergraduate and graduate students in the conceptualization and organization of the events, and for the subsequent conference volumes also edited by students.

Item Open Access Shallow Pasts, Endless Horizons: Sustainability & Archaeology(Chacmool Archaeological Association, 2017-02-16) Favreau, Julien; Patalano, RobertThe 48th Annual Chacmool Conference explored the concept of sustainability from an archaeological perspective. Sustainability can be broadly defined as the way in which people or communities remain diverse, yet productive while maintaining an ecological balance. As public awareness increases in response to the ramifications of modern landuse and its ecological impact, sustainable practices that probe potential strategies for alleviating current pressures have emerged in a number of disciplines including archaeology. The archaeology of sustainability has the potential to transcend geographical and temporal boundaries through a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach. This is especially true considering that archaeology has the advantage of providing both diachronic and synchronic snapshots of the past which may serve as precedents of sustainable living in modern times. Another important development has been the use of sustainable methods in archaeological research which allow researchers to extract an increasing amount of information from a range of digital and less destructive tecniques. Also emerging from the concept of sustainability in archaeology is a reflexive gaze upon the discipline itself. It would seem as though public and community engagement as well as Indigenous archaeologies provide some of the solutions in creating a sustainable archaeology, now and in the future. The papers in Part I and II of these proceedings touch upon the aforementioned sub-themes of sustainability in archaeology. Additionally, the papers in Part III are included in recognition of the late Jane Holden Kelley, her various contributions in archaeology and anthropology, and most importantly, on the positive influence she had on generations of people who had come to know her. It is hoped that the entirety of this volume contributes to the growing dialogue regarding sustainability and archaeology.Item Open Access War & Peace: Conflict and Resolution in Archaeology(Chacmool Archaeology Association, 2017-11-02) Benfer, Adam K.The 45th annual Chacmool Archaeology Conference, "War and Peace: Conflict and Resolution in Archaeology," continued the tradition of discussing problems and new innovations in the field of archaeology at the University of Calgary. Warfare and, by extension, the peace that follows it, are extensively interwoven into the majority of cultures in both the past and present. Due to the continued prominence of conflict within human history, archaeologists have often encountered a need to understand these cultural clashes. The 2012 conference discussed the topic of conflict in all its forms using an interdisciplinary and global perspective and the papers in these proceedings reflect that diversity.Item Open Access Trading Spaces: The Archaeology of Interaction, Migration, and Exchange(Chacmool Archaeology Association, 2017-11-03) Patton, Margaret; Manion, JessicaThe 46th Annual Chacmool Archaeology Conference, “Trading Spaces: The Archaeology of Interaction, Migration, and Exchange” focused on the exchange of goods and ideas between people, contributing to the development of new ideas regarding human interaction in archaeology. The chapter authors in this volume explore the interaction and context of how the movement of people, materials, and ideas influenced human civilizations, and the resulting impact on the archaeological record. The 2013 conference explored these themes in a variety of cultures worldwide.Item Open Access Post-Pleistocene Man and his Environment on the Northern Plains(The University of Calgary, 1969) Forbis, R.G.; Davis, L.B.; Christensen, O.A.; Fedirchuk, G.Item Embargo Megaliths to Medicine Wheels: Boulder Structures in Archaeology(The University of Calgary, 1981) Wilson, Michael; Road, Kathie, L.; Hardy, Kenneth, J.Item Embargo Directions in Archaeology: A Question of Goals(The University of Calgary, 1982) Francis, Peter D.; Poplin, Eric C.Item Embargo Networks of the Past: Regional Interaction in Archaeology(The University of Calgary, 1981) Francis, Peter D.; Kense, F.J.; Duke, P.G.Item Embargo Carnivores, Human Scavengers & Predators: A Question of Bone Technology(The University of Calgary, 1983) LeMoine, Genevieve M.; MacEachern, A.
