PRECONFERENCE 2: Digital Displays for Visualization, Engagement, and Learning
    (2016-09-18) Nutt, Mike
This preconference takes place in the new Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning and includes a tour of the building. Participants will learn about the vision for the building, its architecture, design, and technology implementation. Sessions will include how the building, along with its technologies and the pedagogies employed by the teaching faculty, support the vision to enhance teaching and learning; and how librarians are partnering with others engaged with the program. Additional sessions will describe how other institutions are innovating in new types of projects involving teaching, learning, and libraries.

5th Annual Designing Libraries Conference Program
    (2016-09)
Designing Libraries brings together leading experts from a variety of disciplines who share the common vision of creating innovative environments that meet the current and future needs of students and researchers. This year’s conference covers a broad range of topics, from visualization, virtual reality and maker spaces to innovation in design and architecture. In attendance are librarians, educators, architects and technology innovators from across North America and around the world. Much work has been done here at the University of Calgary to envision nextgeneration libraries. Our library is currently leading a North American study, funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, to explore the role of academic libraries in enhancing multi-disciplinary research. Scholars from a variety of specializations have contributed.

Joe and Rika Mansueto Library: A Year Later – Lessons Learned
    (2012-05-17) Vaughan, Jim
Jim Vaughan will describe the vision behind the Helmut Jahn-designed Joe and Rika Mansueto Library and then talk about what we have learned since the opening of the facility on May 16, 2011. In addition to the beauty and functionality of Mansueto, its genius lies in its enabling features. He will highlight much that Mansueto has made (and is making) possible throughout the Library system.

    Designing Specialized Spaces in Libraries
    (2012-05-17) Vaughan, Jim
Jim Vaughan will discuss the renovation of the Special Collections Research Center’s public spaces, a project undertaken thanks to the economic and logistical benefits of synchronizing the renovation with the construction of the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library. The new, state-of-the-art Exhibition Gallery and renovated research and teaching spaces are located on the pathway between the Joseph Regenstein Library and the Joe and Rika Mansueto Library, thus creating greater visibility for the Special Collections Research Center. The new and renovated spaces provide flexible, technology-equipped facilities for the presentation, interpretation, and consultation of primary sources by individuals, groups, and classes.

A Year or Two Later: The UW Libraries Research Commons
    (2012-05-18) Ray, Lauren
Lauren Ray will describe what she’s learned in her experience overseeing the development of a new and experimental library space at the University of Washington. She’ll describe how the Research Commons has benefitted from the development of campus partnerships, and takeaways from the user assessments conducted in the first two years. She will also talk about expectations for the space prior to opening, as well as the challenges and opportunities that exist with an evolving space. She will share work done to link the Research Commons space itself to “library” content through the development of interdisciplinary events.

    Interior Design Perspective
    (2012-05-17) Lippincott, Joan K.
Picking out furniture is but one aspect of interior design of new and renovated library facilities, but it usually receives all of the attention. In addition, clients should talk with their designers about the use of color, incorporating cultural and institutional representations, displays and signage that promote content and services, and separation of collaborative and quiet spaces.

    Designing Specialized Spaces in Libraries
    (2012-05-17) Hemmasi, Harriette
Harriette Hemmasi will relate the evolution of the Digital Scholarship Lab, outlining the journey and vision for this innovative space at Brown University. The Digital Scholarship Lab is a collaborative, interactive, student-focused learning environment designed to pioneer research, development and deployment of scholarly applications which leverage the potential of a large video wall and touch-enabled devices that can display specially designed high resolution content along with all forms of multimedia content from the web and other external sources. The installment will complement Brown’s high performance computing and will serve many of the unique teaching, learning, and research needs of Brown faculty and students across the disciplines.
