Abstract
This paper explores the report in Cass. Dio 41.43 that the Republican forces at Thessalonica in 49 BCE encountered auspicial difficulties when they attempted to hold elections for the next year. This incident demonstrates the respect of the Republican forces for state divination and sheds light on the significance and workings of the lex curiata.
